The project "Tiere Live"
Encouraging a respectful, emotionally-anchored sense of understanding in children and young people for nature and living organisms in natural settings is a central goal of teaching the biological sciences and environmental education in both formal and non-formal contexts. The project “Tiere Live" aims to support the development of empathy through stable assistance and specific types of environmental education. This goal has a high importance, especially against the background of the implementation of the Bavarian biodiversity strategy. The biodiversity strategy of the state government, from its inception on the 1st of April 2008, has four central aims:
- to protect species diversity
- to preserve the diversity of habitats
- to improve the ecological permeability of migration barriers such as streets, rails and dams (habitat connectivity)
- to convey and deepen knowledge about the environment
Environmental education is, thus, a central task in the implementation of the Bavarian biodiversity strategy.
Children and young people need to learn that animals are a part of nature, establish a sence of connection with the habitats and ecosystems surrounding them, and recognize the importance of biodiversity in order to consider it as worthy of preservation. This learning process can be supported by involving the emotional participation of children and young people: the natural fascination for nature and animals makes them particularly receptive to “live" experiences, through which children can be inspired by the organisms, become familiar with and appreciate them, overcome possible prejudices and fears. In this context, special activities to promote higher motivation are included.

Cooperation partners and sponsors
This shared project of the Bavarian Academy of Nature Conservation and Landscape Management in Laufen (ANL) and the Academy for Teacher Education and Personnel Management in Dillingen (ALP) has set itself the aim to support teachers and environmental educators who work with students, children and young people using practical materials and basic information. The materials are compiled in an action manual, which is provided in the form of a folder.
The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Environment and Consumer Protection and the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture.
The first edition of the action manual was funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Environment and Consumer Protection in the context of the implementation of the Bavarian biodiversity campaign.
