2013 International Congress of Odonatology
In a long tradition of international odonatological symposia since 1971, the 2013 International Congress of Odonatology will serve anew as a scientific forum where researchers and students from all over the world can exchange and discuss their experiences. After the postponement of the International Congress of Odonatology in Odawara, Japan, to July-August 2012, which was unfortunately necessary due to the dramatic events in consequence of the earthquake and the tsunami on 11 March 2011, the biennial rhythm of international odonatological symposia now experiences a compulsory break. Nevertheless, we are confident that we shall offer a unique opportunity for many colleagues from all continents to visit one of the most attractive regions of Central Europe to present the results of their latest research.
In a rapidly changing world, with regular evil tidings for the environment, it is essential to develop appropriate strategies to save the diversity of Odonata in a global context. One of the main targets of this conference will be the support and reinforcement of scientific networks and build new collaborations between researchers and institutions.
Together with the Bavarian Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management (ANL), the Worldwide Dragonfly Association (WDA), the Society of German-speaking Odonatologists (GdO) ) and in consensus with International Odonatological Foundation, Societas Internationalis Odonatologica (S.I.O.) will organize and conduct this congress from 17 to 21 June 2013 in the city of Freising, Bavaria, Germany. The call for sessions is open now (see below the link to the program and the prices and fees too). The ancient diocesan town Freising is located close to the Bavarian capital Munich in one of Germany's most attractive regions. We are confident to offer a highly interesting programme that covers a wide range of odonate subjects, and look forward to welcome participants from all parts of the world.
The post-congress tour will lead from 22 to 26 June 2013 to the countryside of southeastern Bavaria, with four overnight stays in the charming small town of Laufen on river Salzach, directly on the border to Austria. It will include a variety of excursions that will give a good overview on the 76 Bavarian species of Odonata and their habitats, including alpine biotopes. Please note that this tour will be restricted to 50 participants only, i.e. the number of persons that fit into one bus. The Post-Congress-Agenda is now available (see link below).
From now on, the congress homepage (see below) will be regularely updated and consecutively filled with additional information. Please bookmark this page and stay tuned!
Looking forward to meet you in 2013,
Florian Weihrauch (WDA)
