Research projects of the Bavarian Academy for nature conservation and landscape management
Ongoing research projects
In addition to further education, research is an essential pillar of the Bavarian Academy for nature conservation and landscape management (ANL). Currently, the following projects are ongoing:

Nature conservation in the forest: clean up or leave small-scale windfalls?
The aim of the research project is to develop of nature conservation practice recommendations for foresters while dealing with small-scale windfalls. Cooperation partners are the University of Regensburg and the Bavarian Forest National Park.
Grazing and nature conservation in Bavaria
The importance of extensive grazing as a measure of landscape conservation has increased dramatically over the last ten years in Bavarian nature conservation. In the project, habitat types of Bavaria are analyzed for their suitability for these (specific) grazing strategies and the results used to develop concrete recommendations for management. An online database will also provide detailed information on Bavarian grazing projects.
Support alpine pastures – new ways for diversity
In the context of the INTERREG-project, grazing methods with endangered, locally adapted livestock breeds are being developed and tested in practice for the management of alpine pastures. Fallow alpine pastures are reactivated and established valuable habitats for animal and plant species. An economically viable and ecologically exemplary alpine pasture management strategy is promoted.
Conservation measures for butterflies (Maculinea)
The symbiosis of Maculinea with ants is scientifically fascinating and an ambitious nature conservation aim. In this project, habitat requirements are researched and management strategies for three Maculinea species of wetlands are developed. In particular, the effects of mowing frequencies and mowing times are being tested.
Root cause analysis: Why the Palaeno Sulphur (Colias palaeno) disappears?
The Palaeno Sulphur (Colias palaeno) is a characteristic species of bogs in the alpine foothills and an indicator of intact raised bog habitat complexes. In the research project, the reasons for the significant decline of this species are analyzed and essential causes of their endangerment are isolated. Based on the discussion of possible causes, management recommendations are developed.
Completed research projects
Management strategies to keep degraded raised bogs open – the grazing “Schönramer Filz"
As part of an effort to restore rare raised bogs, management strategies to keep degraded raised bogs open were developed during a survey of fauna. The research approach was extensive sheep grazing on “Schönramer Filz". At the same time, the question of whether it is possible to restore strongly disturbed bog areas through waterlogging was investigated.
Faunal survey in renaturated bogs
Faunal surveys were conducted for the successful control of restoration of rewetted “Frästorfflächen" in two bogs. Thereby especially among the birds, dragonflies, ants and beetles are found many endangered species on the red list. In particular, resting and foraging waders benefited from rewetting.
