Species conservation: Artificial wood chip piles as nesting places for Natrix natrix and Zamenis longissimus.
Summary
Artificial piles of grass clippings and wood chips are well accepted as nesting places by grass snake (Natrix natrix) and aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus) replacing decomposing waste wood. These piles may help to support both snake species adjacent to their core habitats either as compensation measure or as an interim solution until equivalent natural structures are established. Thus, material from scrub clearance can be used locally for species conservation.

The value of powerline swaths for lichens.
Summary
Powerline swaths are potentially valuable areas for soil inhabiting lichens, due to the protection of the surrounding forest against fertilizers and contaminants from agriculture, industry and traffic. The development of nitrogen-poor swards and heaths with open soil, representing the target biotopes, depends on the absence of agricultural utilization. A constant maintainance is necessary to sustain a steady state instead of cutting down the shrubs periodically.

Ex situ cultures of endangered native plants – population genetics and guidelines for sampling, cultivation and reintroduction.
Summary
This paper gives an overview on population genetics in the ex situ conservation of endangered native plant species. The main goal of ex situ cultivation is the conservation of both genetic diversity and adaptation potential to environmental changes. Studies in population genetics of ex situ cultures are presented. Ex situ populations often suffer from genetic erosion. Therefore, broad sampling of an initial pool of genotypes in the wild and a good documentation are essential. During cultivation, sample size should be as high as possible, and both conscious unconscious selection should be avoided. Reintroductions should consider the habitat conditions of the species. The outplanting of juvenile plants appears to be more successful than the sowing of seeds. Considering these aspects, ex situ cultivation can be a useful contribution to conserve endangered plant species.

Land-use history of calcareous grasslands is crucial for the conservation of their species diversity.
Summary
The diversity of historical land-use systems in Switzerland led to habitat mosaics with a high spatial and temporal variability. Efforts to protect and maintain species-rich calcareous grasslands consequently have to be inspired by looking back into the former dynamics of use and management – otherwise, they will not be able to succeed. A recently published literature review (Diacon-Bolli et al. 2012) confirms the need to consider land-use history for protecting habitats in cultural landscapes.

Action programme to control Ambrosia in Bavaria: Results after six years of monitoring.
Summary
The common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) originating from North America is a highly allergenic plant, which may lead to an increase in pollen allergies when spreading in Bavaria. In 2007, a comprehensive action programme was developed in Bavaria to prevent further spreading of this invasive plant. Its population development as well as the success of control measures were monitored. 279 large populations were discovered by the year 2012. The proportion of newly discovered populations along roads has significantly increased in recent years. The majority of the Ambrosia populations known in Bavaria is currently subject to treatment. Seven years after the adoption of the action programme voluntary measures turn out to be not sufficient. In particular, the rapid spread along roads from where common ragweed can invade surrounding areas is problematic. Further measures, such as the introduction of legal regulations, need to be considered in order to prevent further spreading. Currently, the chances for successful pest control are still good; however this would require greater efforts.

Kassandra had nothing to laugh about (too).
Summary
Kassandra was a mythical figure of ancient Greece. Nobody believed her gloomy prophecies. Many naturalists and environmentalists see themselves in a similar situation: nobody listens to them and not enough is getting done of what they think is right. The Kassandra position is a tragic one, it consists of the combination of knowledge and the feeling of duty to act on the one hand and powerlessness on the other. But the situation today is not as hopeless as it was back then: time and again something is achieved. And you can escape the tragic narrative. Humor can help to overcome tragedy and difficult times and it can be used as a “tool". Humor is when you laugh anyway.

Conservation of species that nest on buildings – opportunities and experiences.
Summary
Bats and wild birds that nest on buildings are typical synanthropic species that inhabit cities and settlements. They represent an integral part of nature in our cities. Modern construction methods, renovations and changes in urban and settlement structure threaten the survival of these species. Taking into account their nesting needs in construction projects and providing nesting places on new buildings would help meeting the legal requirements of species conservation and maintaining populations. Proactive measures would minimise conflicts and inexpensively support species conservation. In Munich, the Landesbund für Vogelschutz promotes the conservation of birds and bats that nest on buildings with its project „Species Conservation on Buildings“.

Evaluation of cormorant management in the Aischgrund (Middle Frankonia)
Summary
Investigations of the impact of cormorant management in the Aischgrund Special Protected Area (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive were conducted on behalf of the Government of Middle Franconia in 2011/12. After two years of investigation, there is a high probability that the conservation status of the target species did not deteriorate due to the permission for shooting of cormorants in the SPA. At the same time, the economic losses in fisheries could be significantly reduced. An essential requirement for the success of the project was the joint effort of all stakeholders to reduce disturbances connected with pond management in the protected areas as much as possible.

Alpine pasture project in Upper Bavaria – an instrument to bring together agriculture and nature conservation.
Summary
The Bavarian alpine pasture landscape is characterised by a high variety of special habitats and species that are to be conserved. The pilot study “Alpine pasture project in Upper Bavaria" carried out by the nature conservation division of the Government of Upper Bavaria provides an instrument of cooperation between nature conservation and alpine pasture farming which is new to Bavaria. Measures which should take into account the operational requirements and ensure the conservation of the unique alpine pasture habitat were discussed and developed with alpine pasture farmers.

“Chic Eco Box" for Berchtesgaden National Park – Visitor Centre “Haus der Berge“ opened on May 24, 2013.
Summary
See, hear, feel, taste and touch nature — that is the aim of the new education and information centre in Berchtesgaden. But the 19 million Euro project “Haus der Berge" with its education and information centre and an outdoor area does not meet everyone’s taste. Especially locals are critical. Hence, now that the construction is finished, everyone is cordially invited to get an own picture of Upper Bavaria’s flagship tourism project. Not only to join in a conversation but because it is worth a visit.

Action programme on Bavarian species diversity – a new initiative to meet the 2020 targets of the Bavarian Strategy on Biological Diversity.
Summary
In 2013 and 2014, the Bavarian Government provided additional funding for the implementation of the Bavarian Strategy on Biological Diversity. This includes inter alia, one million Euros per year for the “Action Programme on Bavarian Species Diversity". As a start, 39 projects were chosen in cooperation with regional nature conservation agencies, the Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU) and the Bavarian Academy for Nature Conservation (ANL) to implement the Action Programme. These projects belong to the fields of species conservation and management (including the diversity of cultivated plants), biodiversity of the Alps, and public relations for biodiversity conservation. In the following years, it is intended to continue and extend the Action Programme to meet the 2020 targets in species conservation.
